Obesity Center (Department of Bariatrics)

Bariatric surgery or obesity surgery is a specialization of surgery that includes a variety of weight loss surgeries.

Bariatric Surgery is aimed at people with morbid obesity,who have exhausted their efforts and options in losing weight by other methods, such as lifestyle and diet changes, exercise or medication, or who simply wish to lose weight in the first place with the help of surgery.

The main principle of bariatric surgery is to reduce the size of the stomach, which is achieved in several ways.

Surgery today offers a solution to obese patients who have not been able to lose their excess body weight despite repeated attempts to diet.

The terms overweight and obese describe gradations of body weight greater than ideal for a particular height. What determines the “magnitude” of obesity is the body mass index (BMI), a number that correlates body weight with height.

BMI = Body Weight (Kg)/Height (m) ²

So, based on BMI, patients who need surgical treatment for their obesity are those who have:

BMI > 40 or > 35 and a concomitant diseasediseases, such as diabetes mellitus or hypertension;

Next to the Patient

At the Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS” we treat each patient as a human being and not as a potential surgery. We are really trying to solve his problem in the most effective way. In many cases, patients managed to lose their extra pounds without having to undergo surgery.

What are the steps:

01

You fill out the interest form and we contact you to schedule the appointment.

02

The goal of the first appointment that the patient will make at the Obesity Center is to get to know his profile and his real problems. If it is judged that the patient needs surgery (high BMI or concomitant problems) we choose the best surgical method based on their problems.

03

The duration of hospitalization is usually 1 night. The patient enters on the day of the operation and the next day at noon, if the necessary check is done, he can return home.

04

The return to normal activity varies from patient to patient. An important factor is age. Usually, it takes 1 to 2 weeks for the patient to feel completely normal.

Types of surgical interventions against obesity
Bariatric operations are divided into two broad categories.

Surgical operations that simply limit the capacity of the stomach:

• Gastric ring
• Elongated gastrectomy (Gastric sleeve - sleeve gastrectomy)
Gastric pleat
Short Helix Gastric Bypass

Surgical operations that combine a decrease in gastric capacity and malabsorption of food:

Long helix gastric bypass
Cholopancreatic diversion

Which surgery is best for you?

All bariatric operations, if performed correctly by an experienced surgeon, are safe and effective.

The most important thing for choosing the most appropriate method is the correct and objective information of the patient about:
the pros and cons of each
the expected result (weight loss, regulation of metabolic disorders)
his lifestyle and diet after the operation

For this reason, it is important that the specialized obesity surgeon is able to perform all the operations and not try to direct the patient towards the type of surgery he performs. The specialized obesity team, taking into account the medical history, clinical examination, eating habits and psychological profile of each patient, will recommend the most appropriate intervention in each case.
